The Newquay Safe Partnership has been busy this weekend, partners, including the Police, Cornwall Council Licensing, Fire and Rescue Service and Environmental Health, have made several multi agency visits to licensed premises and budget accommodation (Surf Shacks) in Newquay.
9 Surf Lodges/Shacks were visited and a number of issues surrounding guests under 18 were picked up in some of them including alcohol in premises, alcohol being drunk on premises, boys and girls accommodated in rooms together.
The alcohol confiscated from the young people was not purchased in Newquay and the licensed premises involved will be visited.
The Surf Lodges that are applying our safeguarding guidelines are already reporting better behaviour amongst their younger guests. These premises had the required staff on site, parental consent forms and guests were aware of the rules about no alcohol on the premises. There were also several good results with people being turned away from clubs and bars without the correct ID or because they had alcohol on them.
Our Safeguarding scheme is working well with the parents of several young people drunk or incapable being contacted to come and collect them including:
• a group of five 16 year old girls from Bristol
• a group of four 16 year olds from Solihull
• a further six girls from Solihull had alcohol confiscated and the lead parents for the group were contacted, having also gone away on holiday themselves.
• three girls, who had older boys on the premises, were asked to leave their accomodation and their parents were contacted.
• two more parents of under age drinkers were contacted and an ambulance was called to attend a drunk and unconsious 16 year old, whose parents were also called.
All of the families of the young people returned home will have visits from their local police as part of our 'Follow you home' scheme to ensure anti-social behaviour that occurs on holiday does not stay on holiday.
More multi-agency visits are planned during July to clubs, bars and surf lodges, at a variety of times of the day and week and we hope that the visits will continue to raise awareness and correct management of young visitors in accommodation in Newquay.
Operations Brunel and Touchdown will continue to meet trains and planes arriving in Newquay giving advice and guidance on alcohol and behaviour to young people and anyone with alcohol or drugs found on them.
In addition to the multi-agency visits:
• 458 cans and bottles of alcohol were confiscated in Newquay
• 8 Licensing breach notices (L10s) were issued
• 7 Direction to leave notices were issued
• 2 Stop checks were carried out (51s)
• 2 Drunk and disorderly penalty notices were issued
• 4 Arrests were made for minor offences
• Towan, Tolcarne and Fistral Beaches were cleared of groups of people several times.
• Noise issued on the Kilacourt are being followed up and one case of irresponsible alcohol promotion.
• Flyering licensing conditions have or are being followed up, and also Clubs and Bars doormen ID requirements (section 19).
The Newquay Safe Partnership will continue to make checks and follow up where necessary to ensure all premises are acting as they should be to control anti social behaviour and under age drinking and action will be taken in required. The Street Safe scheme will continue to proactively marshall behaviour in Newquay town centre and support on-going Police activity.
Comments
I think we need to protect the younger people who come here as they are vulnerable and the work being done is real best practice but in all honesty Newquay is not an awful place at night. have lived in a few towns, 1 city and abroad and believe me Newquay is the safest place I have EVER gone on a night out on. If you think we haveit rough here you should o on a night out in Dudley, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Manchester or Tenerife (all places I have lived and worked) and the you wil see exactly how much better off we are down here. If you go to any town or city anywhere in the country on a Friday or Saturday night you will get drunken and 'anti-social' behaviour. Newquay is no different other to any other town, except you get a much better night out and with all the additional measures being takenover this last year it is probably the safest place to party!

ReportIt's definitely needed. Newquay is like another world at night. During the day it's quite a peaceful seaside town with a good vibe with locals and visitors, but at night it's awful. There are some good spots but there are equally some bad places too. Newquay sadly still attracts a certain element that really wouldn't be welcome anywhere...

ReportGood to hear, perhaps this will help to make Newquay a nicer place to go for a night out.
