COASTGUARDS have issued fresh warnings to holidaymakers not to sit under cliffs after 20 tons of rock crashed onto a newquay beach on Wednesday.

Fortunately no one was hurt in the rock fall, which happened on Towan beach close to the harbour during a busy afternoon.

Experts say it could have been caused by anything from fluctuating weather conditions to high tides and on shore winds.

Dave Bulley, of the Newquay Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team, said: "A good few tons of rock fell from the cliff – we went down to make sure everything was safe. Luckily no one was hurt. We'd remind people to make sure they don't sit directly beneath the cliffs as they can be dangerous."
